The Beautiful Days of Summer

Movie Review: 500 days of summer

Everyone loves summer. It's a time for friends, family, and fun. Ballgames, barbecues, amusement parks, and movies, summer is just a time to sit back, relax and enjoy. Enjoy time off, good weather and whatever else it might bring. Am I missing something? Oh yes, love. Summer is a time for love.

The film can be pretty much summed up in one of the first lines of the film. "This is a story of boy meets girl. But you should know up front, this is not a love story." But is it? 500 Days of Summer is not your typical romantic film. There's something to it, something more than your usual romantic comedy. Maybe it's the style it's done? Maybe it's the realistic nature? Maybe it's the wonderful music? Maybe its the beautiful cinematography? Maybe, its Tom and Summer...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are the leads, Tom and Summer. These are real everyday people. One particular scene where Summer questions Tom about believing in love. Tom replies, "It's love, it's not Santa Claus." It is a real thing, a crazy thing called love. Tom falls in love with Summer from the start. She doesn't. Tom is like every other guy, and every guy knows of a girl like Summer. The girl they want, but can't have. They try, to no avail. It's frustrating, and Tom is frustrated. He's happy then sad. He doesn't know what to think. Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel have great chemistry together and give solid performances. You really believe their relationship and hardships. It makes you notice the little things in relationships. The film highlights two young stars on the rise. With some great performances lately for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, his stock is rising...

500 days of summer directed by March Webb is interesting. Summer believes in destiny and soul mates. She has no qualms of getting sexually and romantically involved with Tom who adores and worships the ground that Summer treads on. Summer is very honest right from the beginning about their relationship. She does not want what Tom wants. She believes in destiny and living a married life with someone she was destined to be a soul mate. It is difficult for Tom to imagine and believe that a soul mate is different from a romantically involved passionate individual. But then when Summer leaves Tom he realizes she believes in what she says. When he meets her after a few days , he is surprised that she is married, pregnant and totally content. His whole life and love revolved around Summer. Love comes in different ways. Love from a soul mate is totally different. It is special. This movie is different and rather philosophical in some ways.

The story is not in direct order as it goes back and forth from different days Tom remembers his life and relationship with Summer. When remembering, we may not remember every detail in order. We choose what we want to remember. May that be the good, or the bad. For Tom, it's a little bit of both. Big props to the editing department. The film shows the good and the bad of love, lost, moving forward. There's something about it that sets it apart from the usual romantic comedy.

500 Days of Summer is really refreshing now a days. It's funny, unique, and true to life. It's got something for everybody to like. Director Marc Webb shines in his feature film debut. I'm interested to see where he goes from here.

My yoke is easy and my burden is light

"Come to me all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. " Matthew 11:28-30

This is one of these verses which sounds nice and for a while you can take comfort in it. Until things really just get pushed too far and you realize that you have no idea what the blazes it’s supposed to mean and it doesn’t even seem to be true as far as you can see. What is Jesus’ yoke anyways? If we say it’s living in obedience to God as Jesus did, then we’re even more up the creek without a paddle. Anyone who has actually devoted themselves to following God’s instructions will figure out in pretty short order that God is always asking people to do things which are hard, if not practically impossible. Look at scriptures:

Abraham, leave your home and your family. I’ll tell you where you’re going later, but just go now.

David, take a small rock and go kill that giant.

Hosea, marry that woman who’s going to cuckold you and redeem her with your love. Make sure every knows about your humiliation so they see a model of my Love for them too.

Jesus, give up your glory to live among the fallen then let yourself be tortured and killed.

Paul, you just keep on preaching until they kill you. And when you’re whipped bloody and imprisoned, be sure to count it all glory.

God’s ways are many things, but easy and light don’t really fit the bill. So what is Jesus talking about here?

I think that I’ve figured it out. This is going to take a minute, but stick with me here.

The first thing we need to know is that one of the greatest lies the world tells us is that a good life, and perhaps especially a good Christian life, is having safe, respected, comfortable, hopefully prosperous lives. But over and over in scriptures we see that God calls people to live recklessly in following Him. God never guarantees our safety or comfort or even respectability. Instead He asks us to give up absolutely everything in order to follow where He leads.

One of my favorite verses of scriptures is where Jesus says, “seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33) To me this means that we are called to do what God asks us to do regardless of the cost and trust that God will cover you. Know that your kids would suffer in daycare? Then have a parent home to raise them and trust that God will cover you. Know God wants you to help someone who needs money to get their car fixed? Then give them your savings and trust that God will cover you. Know that God has called you to live in an impoverished neighborhood? Then move there and trust God to cover you. Seek first God’s kingdom. Always and in all things, regardless of the cost. Because God will cover you.

Now, the problem is that inevitably, there is a cost. There is suffering involved. Sometimes it seems like God’s not doing His part. There’s not enough money to pay the bills. Your car breaks down. Your new neighborhood is dangerous and unwelcoming. And you begin to think that maybe you’ve just been foolish. God isn’t really going to cover you. He wants you to use good judgement and take care of yourself, not do foolish, reckless things. After all, you’ll find more than enough good Christians who will tell you just that.

This is, I think where Jesus’ yoke comes in. Just a couple of verses before the famous yoke verse, Jesus prays to his Father, “I praise you Father, lord of heaven and earth because you have . . . revealed [these things] to little children.” (Matthew 11:25) It comes down to a child-like trust. This is Jesus’ yoke. Even in the midst of disaster, we can trust that God is in charge, that He has a purpose for what is happening. Or if it is an attack of the enemy that He will aid us in the battle so that we can overcome. So you trust. You don’t despair, you don’t curse God or your lot. If you allow the Holy Spirit to work, you will even find that the fruits of the spirit continue to grow. Instead of anxiety, there is this joy and peace.

And then you begin to wonder if you are crazy. It doesn’t help that people keep coming up to you with sad puppy eyes to ask in tones usually used for those suffering from dementia, “how are you doing?”

“Fine,” you reply with a smile.

“No really. It must be so hard. It’s OK not to hide behind a strong face all the time.”

“Um, well I have my moments, but really, I’m doing well. I’m just trusting God, I guess.”

“Of course. Well, if you ever need to talk . . .” and they pat your hand and walk away.

(That’s a best case scenario. At worst, they do like a good friend of mine once did and say, “stop feeding me a bull s**t sandwich – of course you’re not OK!”)

So you begin to wonder. “I thought I was OK. Actually, I’m pretty happy. Maybe I am just kidding myself. Maybe I’m subjecting myself to some weird form of self-induced brainwashing and really I should be majorly depressed and planning a trip to the doctor for some happy pills. What if it’s not really God and I’m just CRAZY? Ahhhhhhh!” Or at least that’s what you say to yourself if you’re me.

See, we struggle with the yoke because it is easy and light. We’re like oxen who have been trained up under too much weight- always having to lean into it, tug and pull and huff and puff at the exertion of carrying this heavy yoke. And then Jesus comes along and gives us His yoke. But it just feels wrong. It’s so easy and light. It can’t be right. So a lot of us go back to our old, heavy yokes. They’re painful, but at least they feel like they fit.

And then all of us Christians who have taken back our yokes (if we ever actually took them off to begin with – most don’t), sit up at night and worry just like everyone else. And we live just like everyone else, because God can’t really think I’d be able to go there or do that – He knows what an unreasonable burden it would be. That’s for saints and missionaries, not for everyday Christians like me who are just trying not to get into trouble.

And this is exactly how we lose our saltiness. Then we wonder that Christianity is seen as fit for nothing more than to be trampled underfoot. But Jesus’ yoke is easy. His burden is light. That’s a good thing to, because there’s no way we can go to the crazy places God wants to send us carrying our own yokes. We just have to be willing to trade our worry and sorrow for peace and joy. Give up our safety and respectability for gentleness and humility. And trust that God will cover us. And He will.

"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39.

Finally Home

Laura Ling and Euna Lee are finally home and free.

I was quite overwhelmed when I saw this. They were sentenced to 12 years in a labor prison for illegal entry into North Korea, and unspecified hostile acts. The past 5 months must have been like hell for them. But thank God, He has turned the whole situation around. It is so good to know that now everyday they are able to spend time with their loved ones, family and friends. And that is the most important. I must tell my mummy and papa I love them more, bring them out to eat more often, always remember to hug and kiss my xiaomei and go shopping to ikea with my da jie like whenever she wants to. hahaha! I guess they will have goosebumps if they see this. Guiltily sometimes I feel I am spending more quality time with my friends than with my family..do you feel that also? I don't know for you.. It seems like we will tend to take for granted in things that are simple and most natural in life and the people who you will see everyday, the ones who are closest to you, your family...

The Moonwalker

That day I woke up to the sms on my phone, one message after another from all my friends, saying the same thing...Michael Jackson has passed away. At first I cannot believe it, I got up, my heart started to beat faster..I thought "this can't be real"..I googled it and people were reacting to it all over the internet, I quickly turned to Channel Newasia and there it was the latest news of the day. I didn't know how to react other than a loss of words. As the day gone by, the reality of it started to hit on me. I am really sad, he never had a normal childhood and grew up in front of the world, even my father knows how to sing his songs..he did so much for the world. When I got home that night, I just wanted to watch him and hear him sing again.. Music and me, I'll be there, ABC, The love you saved, speechless, stranger in moscow, with a child's heart, childhood, heal the world, we are the world, man in the mirror, off the wall, thriller, smooth criminal, billie jean, black or white, liberian girl, human nature, will you be there, you are not alone and so many many other MJ tunes everyone grew up listening to..I still remember clearly when I was about 7 years old, whenever my father brought us to the SAF electrical store, I will run to the big TV screen where they always play MJ's smooth criminal, Ghosts, all his classic MTV..that's my favourite spot, I will just be glued to the TV and be so captivated by MJ. He will always live in my heart, forever the "King Of Pop" ...I never was able to watch him in concert and I was really wanting to go next year when I saved up the money. Now I will never be able to see him in this lifetime but I know one day when I get to heaven, I will see Michael Jackson there.

Michael Jackson..a legend forever

Michael Jackson, one of the most widely beloved entertainers and profoundly influential artists of all-time, leaves an indelible imprint in the history of music and in the lives of many people. Coming 29th August will be his 51st birthday. Well I really cannot believe it when I got this news. My heart is saddened because we have lost one of the greatest entertainers of all time. The first music video that changed MTV forever is none other but “Thriller.” MJ changed the game. He revolutionized music, dancing, style, performance, pop culture for 4 decades and today his "Thriller" still remained as the biggest selling album of ALL time . Berry Gordy said "When he was not on stage, he was loving, respectful and shy. When he WAS on stage, he was so in charge you would not believe he was the same person!" Although MJ's life was full of challenges, accusations and pain, yet he was a man full of love and warmth for people especially children. Take away all the tabloids, the controversies and the critics, what you left is simply an amazingly gifted man who always longed and wanted to live a normal life since he started as a lonely child singer of an abusive parent at aged 5... As I watched and listen to the music he made so beautifully, the message of the lyrics he penned, the way he sings, the reflections and poems he wrote, the heart to heart interviews, his dance of impossibly perfect motion and his children, family he loved so much, I really do not think that he was a freak nor was a bizzare man like what the media has always try to portray him as, he was just different..so incredibly different, special and magical. I am truely fascinated and inspired by Michael Jackson. His great contribution to humanity, his courage and audacity to do what was never done, his life that was lived will forever & ever be remembered. I pray his soul to keep. Rest in peace MJ, you are gone but never forgotten. Thank you for being an inspiration to me and to the millions… I have faith & hope that you are doing the “moon walk” on the streets of gold in heaven right now! Keep on dancing!

Fruitful Day

God is good all the time and all the time God is good!!! A few things to really thank God for this day....

First thing I woke up today, got a call asking for a freelancer to work on a project for one month on site....goodness! I just prayed like 1 day ago that God will bless me exactly a one month project so I could earn some good money before school starts in July(if i got in). Woah God answer specific prayers! I should have also prayed specifically for a higher hourly rate too man! hahaha..well after washing up, I went to open the letterbox, lo and behold I finally saw the big brown envelop with the word SIM printed on the top left hand corner, I just grabbed the package which i have been waiting for 3 weeks, as i opened the letter, there it wrote" I am pleased to inform you that you are offered a place in the programme(Bachelor Of Design in Communication Design) awarded by RMIT University..Praise the Lord! I am going to study again haha be a good hardworking student and suck in as much as I need to learn~~

After that I went to UOB to cash out the cheque my client finally gave me..too bad yishun branch had closed, so i had to go all the way to amk hub. However when I got to amk, somehow I got lost, I just cannot find where UOB is at, the first person came to my mind..Jialing! Jialing lives in amk so she will surely know...immediately I called her and thanks Jialing.. she helped me to locate the place just in time. Then I quickly rushed down to lavendar to get my project contract signed. Everything went well and I will be starting work tomorrow so time to wake up early again though this is the only thing I am not looking forward to.

Later on I got down to orchard and went shopping. Oh my it's a Wednesday and there are crowds of people everywhere! And then I realised because Singapore Sales is going on right now. Well that means I must buy something man, afterall I just got my cheque and it is SALE now! hahaha I pampered myself with a steaming yummy hot bowl of ramen, bought some stuff for some friends and of course for myself too heehee. I passed by takashimaya B1 and to my surprise Barbie is holding a mini collector items promotion!! Vera Wang Barbie, Elvis & Priscilla Barbie, Mary Poppins Barbie, Marilyn Monroe Barbie and VINTAGE Barbie 1959, the model that had stop reproduction for sooo long is now finally available again! Brunette Barbie 1962 is there as well..All the past limited collections are there! Oh dear they are all so beautiful, so sexy and so charming. Right on the spot, I just wish I can grab all of them home with me:P It has been such a long time since Mattel has an "exhibition" like that. But there is one thing I do not understand why some of the barbies nowadays(for the younger generation) are just not as nice as before because their heads are so big and very commercialize looking! Well not all the girls will like barbie dolls when they were young but in my own definition barbie is never just a kind of toy, it's something more than that...it's an expression, an artform, fashion..it's a classic and should always be!

Alright to sum up, it has been a fruitful and happy day but I am still looking forward to my happiest day of 2009 hahaha hmm..June 13 & 14 YES! Vanness is coming! Finally he is coming!! I have been waiting for him to come to my church for soooo long..Yeah it's a very foolish and the silliest dream one could ever have but Praise God! THANK God that He even make this silly dream of mine come true HAHA it's like a birthday present too!:)
